Foundation 101

Foundation is a staple in any makeup collection. It’s the one product that I’ll be willing to splurge on and will continuing buy as I finish each container up! So it’s very important to me to find the correct foundation for me.

There are three aspects of foundation to consider when finding the right match. First and most importantly is the shade. You can’t pull off the darkest color in the foundation collection when you are Casper the Ghost pale. It just doesn’t work. Foundation is meant to appear somewhat natural. We are not trying to look like clowns here.

Luckily, foundation makers realize that one shade fits all isn’t going to cut it. Therefore you can find many options within a collection. If you can’t seem to find the perfect match, you could always try to mix two shades. I just did a post about that here

Another aspect of foundation is its formulation. What type of skin is this foundation made for? If you have oily skin, using a foundation that hydrates will only make your skin look greasier. Not cute. And then if your skin is dry and you use a foundation without any moisture, the foundation will sit on your dry spots and become more noticeable.

Some foundation brands are made specifically for oily skin or only for dry skin. Whereas other brands offer the same foundation in two different formulations. For example Revlon ColorStay Foundation ($12.99)(Drugstores) comes in both Normal/Dry or Combination/Oily.

Last but not least is the aspect of coverage. Foundations can range from light to full coverage. Depending on how much acne, scarring, or hyper pigmentation you have will determine the amount of coverage you will need. I know that Nearly Naked Foundation ($9.99)(Drugstores) is a light coverage foundation. It won’t make your skin look cakey, but it won’t cover all your imperfections.

Unfortunately foundation companies don’t always make clear how much coverage their products provide. So if you are curious, check out blogs similar to this one and do some research to find out.

Make sure to keep these three aspects in mind when searching for a new foundation. They all are very important in order to find your perfect match!

Finding the right foundation is tough work. Hence why I stick to the same thing.
